Best Kolomee in Brunei

Kolomee is one of the most popular dishes in Brunei. Every Bruneian would know what is kolomee. Kolomee is usually quite cheap; from $1.50 till $3.50. However, a lot of shops serve terrible kolomee and some merely mediocre. Last time, there was a debate on RadioBrunei about Char Kway Teow or Kolomee. Most people obviously went for Char Kway Teow. I felt that it's because most people hadn't tried the best Kolomee in Brunei. Behold ....

Ocean quarry's kolomee. That's not the name of the stall but it's situated next to the quarry so we called it Ocean Quarry kolomee.

This is the entrance to the canteen. Not a grand entrance but many people still drive their benz and merz and lexuses past the terrible road just to come here and eat

I ordered my first kolomee

Then after finishing it, I still can't get enough of it. So I ordered Kolo MeePoh.

Now why is this shop good? Let me see.

First of all - it's the great tasting kolomee and meepoh that uses their own special recipe which other shops don't have.

Their fantastic soup - which is chocked full of flavour but I dunno how much MSG did they put in there - it's just very nice.

I ordered wonton kolomee, thats why my soup got wontons in it.

Their chili vinegar is also a very good add on to the amazing flavours of the kolomee. I usually put two spoonfuls of vinegar with my kolomee.

Not to forget the amazing ambience ..... erm.... alright maybe not your typical restaurant with good air conditioning and stuff .....

But it still doesn't stop people coming here to eat. So there you go - the best kolomee in Brunei. I challenge you to think of a better place to eat kolomee than this around Brunei.

  3. Been there last two months. My cousin brought me there. Hmm, I would said their sauce are of the sweeter taste as compare to the Seria Hawker kolomee. Different taste. But sadly the Seria kolomee deteriorate nowadays. Not as nice as before. Why can't people maintain standard/quality of the food???

  5. It is situated around Madewa at Jalan Bunut. Turn in to your left at Madewa which is one simpang before Bunut Shell Station. Then turn right at the next junction - then turn left.

Note : The place is not halal :)

  10. Ihsan! Haven't seen ya for a long time! Kolomee ah? I guess everyone has their own version of kolomee recipe so I am not really sure I can put one that is really authentic.

Glad you love the pesto post - make lots of it and store for sandwiches and pastas. :)

Easier to get the ingredients over in UK as well :)

  14. Ter ko ko ...

This best kolomee was my childhoodd kawan!!!!

I used to live near Madewa before I move to Mata Mata. Everything there is still the same. The green plate, the wantan soup and the chilli vinegar which I never try cos I dont eat chilli much. I think their kolomee is my growing process since I born ...kinda 20 years.

Yum Yum ...We always call that place as Ah Lai Kolomee bcos the boss name is Ah Lai. My papa best friend.

I also dunno why people keep going there to eat kolomee ah ...the environment not so good cos its located in quarry ...no aircon just onli fan ...I think the food really plays an important role here. Before we moved, evey sunday morning my family wanna decided where to eat ...then we all say AH LAI KOLOMEE! Really one of my childhood place!

Thanks for posting up this here. Sweet memories....

Note: I feel like your photo shot is getting good now...got the feeling when I saw the magazine food section ah.....good work! Jia You!

  18. What a coincidence! I was about to post about KTM's kolomee which is only $2 by the way. Yes - their kolomee is good. I would say their the best halal kolomee I've tasted but not still not as good as this place :)

  19. I am very sad to say this place has officially closed down - I actually visited the place on the final day, ordered and ate 5 bowls of kolomee ... then tapau 10 packets home for my family. I will always remember this place... RIP :(

  20. I'm sorry to say but Seria Kolo Mee beats Bandar Kolo Mee! Give 'Chong Suang Heng' kolo mee in Seria Food Complex (they call that mian tang)a shot. You'll be blown away!

  22. Jesmine - I think taste is pretty subjective. One's fav can be another's meh .... I've tried Seria kolomee all my life - yes - the stall that you mentioned plus the old school seria kolomee at the old pasar and never really felt that it warranted a 'best in brunei'

Perhaps it did blow you away -- but I felt it was a good kolomee -- just not my favourite kolomee in Brunei.

Had you tried the kolomee in this blog post yet? It's been moving around - but the closest to the original is now next to Pizza Hut Gadong - do give them a try and say "ocean quarry kolomee" and eat with the chili vinegar + the wonton soup. That's still a personal favourite - it's not as good as before though :(
